Latin American and Caribbean Regional Research Group
(GRILAC)

GRILAC China

On February 1, 2023, the FLACSO General Secretariat launched a call for proposals to create the GRILAC China-Latin America and the Caribbean: Multidimensional and Multilevel Relations. In response to this call, a multidisciplinary working group was formed, comprising nine distinguished researchers from the Academic Units of Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, and Uruguay, as well as from the General Secretariat.

The GRILACs seek to stimulate regional research work among teams of specialists from the different Academic Units of the FLACSO System, as well as to promote and strengthen institutional capacities for regional research.

The objective is to generate systematic and up-to-date knowledge about the multidimensional and multilevel relations between China and Latin America and the Caribbean. Specifically, the aim is to:

  • Analyze the relations between China and Latin America and the Caribbean from a multidimensional and multilevel perspective , in areas such as trade, investment, cooperation, politics, security, culture, society and geopolitics, among others.

  • Identify the challenges and opportunities for the countries of the region in their relationship with China and the competition for global power.

  • To generate recommendations for the governments of the region on how to manage their relations with China in a balanced and mutually beneficial way.
