online courses on Contemporary China

Program to promote Chinese studies at FLACSO 2024-2028

The General Secretariat of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), through its Chair of Contemporary China, invites faculty members from its Academic Units to contribute proposals for the creation and implementation of online courses that delve deeper into the study of contemporary China. This initiative aims to strengthen the academic offerings related to Chinese studies, providing a critical and comprehensive view of China's role in the current global landscape.

Competition rules

  • Two (2) course proposals will be selected to be taught during the second semester of 2024.

  • Proposals should focus on the reality of China and/or its links with Latin America and the Caribbean, prioritizing one of the following thematic areas: Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, Environment and Climate Change, Technology and Development, Economy and Trade, Society and Culture.

  • The teaching team will consist of a coordinator and up to 4 additional teachers.

  • The courses should last between 6 and 8 weeks.

  • The proposal can be submitted in Spanish or Portuguese.

  • Officials from the General Secretariat of FLACSO will not be eligible to apply for this call.

Application requirements

  1. Letter of support issued by the Directorate of the corresponding Academic Unit.

  2. Submit a detailed course proposal that includes:

    • Front page

    • Index

    • Justification

    • Goals

    • Course description

    • Target audience

    • Admission requirements

    • Approval requirements

    • Certificate that is awarded

    • Pedagogical modality of the course

    • Teaching staff with biographical sketches

    • Platform

    • Table of contents with its respective bibliography

    • Characteristics of the assessments

    • Course schedule

    • Budget

  3. CV of the coordinator.

Selection process

The proposals will be evaluated based on relevance, innovation, and quality by an ad hoc committee composed of the Director of the Chair of Contemporary Chinese Studies, the Regional Academic Coordinator, and an external expert. Details regarding the evaluation criteria and rubric will be provided to participants at the information session.

The results will be announced on the website and communicated directly to the coordinators and the Directors of the Academic Units of the selected courses.

Benefits

  1. Financial support for course development and scholarships for students in the amount of USD 13,500 for each selected course.

  2. Dissemination and promotion of the course through the communication channels of the General Secretariat of FLACSO and the Contemporary Chinese Chair.

Application method

  1. Participate in the information session on April 17, 2024.

  2. Interested parties should send the required documents (detailed proposal, letter of support and curriculum vitae of the coordinator) via email to cooperacion@flacso.org , before June 15, 2024. It is essential to include all the requested documentation for a comprehensive evaluation of each proposal.
