for the submission of articles that will be included in the book
China and Latin America and the Caribbean: multidimensional and multilevel relations

The Contemporary China Chair of the General Secretariat of FLACSO presents the 1st Call for Research Scholarships for the submission of articles that will be part of the book China and Latin America and the Caribbean: Multidimensional and Multilevel Relations , to be published in April 2024, with the objective of building a bridge of knowledge between Latin America and China, bringing together top-level academics and researchers to foster innovative collaborations that allow understanding the development of contemporary China and addressing the common critical challenges that China and the region face.
Eligibility
The FLACSO System will present five (5) original research projects , which will be selected from a call for research grants open to active students in FLACSO's master's or doctoral programs. The call stipulates the following:
Five research grants will be awarded, each with a total value of USD 1,500.
Research proposals can be submitted individually or in pairs of researchers.
The number of participants in the research does not alter the total amount of the scholarship.
The selected researchers will have a five-month period (July 3-December 3, 2023) to carry out the research to be published.
The research grant will be disbursed to the selected individuals in two installments:
An initial disbursement of USD 500 upon signing the scholarship contract in July 2023.
A second disbursement of USD 1000 upon approval of the final product in December 2023
Research proposals must fall under one of the following 6 axes and themes:
Axis 1. Multilateral/regional/local
Global Development Initiative, summit diplomacy, China-CELAC Forum, decentralized cooperation and paradiplomacy.
Axis 2. Environment
Decarbonization, energy transition, ecological civilization, green BRI.
Axis 3. Economic
RMB digital, fintech and financial innovation, e-commerce, international trade, development finance.
Axis 4. Political/diplomatic
Security and defense, South-South cooperation, strategic partnerships.
Axis 5. Social/cultural
Chinese diaspora in Latin America, academic and cultural diplomacy.
Axis 6. Technology and innovation
Artificial intelligence, smart cities, digital BRI

Call for applications launch date: May 8, 2023
Deadline for submitting proposals: June 4, 2023
Communication of selection results: June 26, 2023
Scholarship start date: July 3, 2023
Disbursement Date 1: Upon signing the contract (USD 500)
Disbursement Date 2: Upon final product approval (USD 1000)
Delivery of the first version: October 31, 2023
Submission of the final revised article: December 3, 2023
Evaluation and selection
The research proposals that will be funded for publication will be evaluated and selected by a panel made up of the Director of the Contemporary Chinese Chair of FLACSO, the Director of International Cooperation of the General Secretariat, the Associate Researcher in Asian Affairs of the General Secretariat and a person from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Costa Rica.
The proposal must clearly establish the objective and research question, its relevance, theoretical framework, contribution to existing literature, proposed methodology, and the data that will be used.
